Dresser Organization Tips

Toscano Vialetto 9-Drawer Dresser

Time to Clean!
Running out of dresser space? Perhaps you are still storing articles that might fit again if you lose 20 to 30 pounds. Somewhere in that menagerie of unmatched socks and worn elastic personals is a plethora of missing valuables. Get organized. If you haven't worn something in two years, box it up and donate it to a charity before your generosity fails you.

Called to Order
Everything in its place: whether you have a four- or five-drawer dresser, or a dresser with six to nine drawers, begin by assigning a drawer to specific articles of clothing. Proper storage keeps clothing in good condition.

Women can protect knits from wrinkles with tissue paper folded in with the garment. Cedar linings will keep moths away from expensive wool blends. Men, consider separating shirts by style and color. A drawer for everything simplifies dresser organization for preschoolers. Three-drawer dressers can be divided into underwear, shirt, and pants drawers.

Wee-Sized Items
Store jewelry and accessories in shallow dresser drawers. Cut cardboard to fit the drawer, cover it with velvet or fleece, and place it in the bottom of the drawer to protect delicate items. Earrings, tie tacks, and such can be stored in lift-out trays from old jewelry boxes, or in see-through glass or plastic boxes. Store silver in jewelry-size, zip-lock plastic pouches to prevent tarnishing.

Cover a 12x12 cardboard square with a thin layer of foam and fabric to match the drawer lining; insert the pins of your favorite broaches. Narrow organizer boxes can be lined with matching fabric and used as drawer dividers for storing socks, stockings, and belts.

Ponder This:
Restore screws of dresser knobs that will not stay tightened by dipping them in nail polish. Old dressers can hold odd smells. Placing a bowl of cat litter in closed drawers for two to three weeks eliminates odors. Clothes will always smell dryer-fresh if you tuck a fabric softener sheet into each dresser drawer. Fabric softener sheets will keep mice out of dresser drawers stored in basements and attics.
