Personal Space
Color Their World |
Function and charm should combine, but don't forget color. A kids dresser can have a wood-grain cabinet and colorful drawers; kids nightstands or bedside tables can take the shape of familiar toys for younger boys and girls, or they can be miniature two-drawer stained or painted wood chests that offer extra storage space.
The Storage Challenge
The furnishings of the room should grow with the child. Cute character themes and pink/blue motifs are fine for young children; older children prefer less animated furnishings. Kids dressers, wardrobes, and armoires are investments that can grow with the child. Subtly painted trims, stained woods, and mirrored doors are versatile and timeless. Select a homework or computer center that is not only kid-friendly, but also expandable with shelves for storage of books, CDs, and DVDs.
Remember that children need easy access to everything in their bedrooms. If you expect a six-year-old child to keep his room tidy, consider kids storage chests or kids lockers. The height of the dresser and shelves that you purchase is important. A first-grader who has to use a stepstool to reach the top drawer of his five-drawer dresser or the top shelves of bookcases will become frustrated and soon figure out that the most convenient place to store everything he needs is in the center of the bedroom floor.
