Chests are gaining in popularity among the nostalgic, sentimental set. And who among us are not nostalgic and sentimental? Hanging out there at the foot of the bed, seemingly innocuous with a boxy, stout shape, a chest could keep all kinds of treasures buried beneath its sealed locks! Well, those of us hip to the function and style of this useful piece of home furnishing know that it is generally blankets or remembrances from past days. Perhaps you are of the more traditional sort and would prefer an actual hope chest. Well, there's plenty of room to stock it full of table linens, china, towels, and that special dress. This is becoming a bit of an antiquated practice, as most families expecting a dowry prefer it in the form of financial securities. Then again, handing over a portfolio with your daughter lacks a certain romance, no?
And of course, any discussion on the diverse function of large chests wouldn't be complete without the brief inclusion of ladies' unmentionables. "Lingerie chests," as they are called, are typically an upright array of drawers set aside from the normal dresser and presumably designed with the delicacy of the intended contents in mind. We suppose regular clothes and undergarments may also occupy the lingerie chests, but it is not recommended.
